Emergency Procedures - Bomb Threat Procedures

In the event that you receive a bomb threat on the telephone, you must try and remain calm. You should try to establish from the caller where the bomb has been placed, at what time it will detonate and why you are the target.
  1. Notify the Chief Warden immediately.
  2. Do not create panic by telling personnel other than your Floor Warden.
  3. The Chief Warden will advise the Police.
  4. The Chief Warden will liase with the tenant involved, to assess the seriousness of the threat. In light of the perceived threat, a decision must be made as to what action should be taken. The basic options prior to finding a suspect device are:
    • Take no further action;
    • Search without evacuation;
    • Evacuate and search, or
    • Evacuate (without search).
    The Chief Warden will sound the 'Alert' signal and advise the relevant Floor Wardens to notify the tenants on the floor that a bomb threat has been received. The tenants should be advised on what action is to be taken.
  5. If it is decided to undertake a search, advise all Floor Wardens who will co-operate to organise a search by wardens.
  6. Searchers will check the building. The search should be undertaken in a systematic way and include looking in the most unlikely places, such as:
    • Fire hydrant cabinets
    • Toilets
    • Equipment rooms
    • Stairwells
    • Potted plants, etc.
    Remember, those who are familiar with an area are the most likely to see something out of place.
  7. The Floor Warden will advise the Chief Warden of the search results.
  8. If the caller names a particular place, a decision may be made to evacuate the particular floor as well as the two above and the one below.
